Given the rich cultural diversity present in this country, aren't John Howard’s remarks that "London holds a special place in the heart of allAustralian's" silly and ill thought out? Isn't the fact that nobody here actually considers themselve

Not at all. The number of Australians who are there,  the number of visitors there, our common language, our shared history, our law, our traditions, our institutions  indicate this. We have no constitutional or legal links so we cannot “split,” as you put it.
